Washington, D.C., August 3, 2025 - Friendships come in many forms, including those involving those special friends who have fur and (typically) four feet. This Sunday, in celebration of National Friendship Day, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, seeks to bring attention to a volunteer opportunity that’s perfect for making a new furry friend for a day.

A Dog’s Day Out Adventure gives volunteers the chance to “check out” a wonderful Lucky Dog who is residing at a boarding facility for a few hours or the whole day. This outing can treat the pup to a fun new experience, like exploring a dog park, strolling through the city, going on a hike, lunch on a pet-friendly patio, or relaxing at home for a snuggle session. Every adventure is valuable and provides dogs with love, enrichment, exposure and a break from boarding life. What a great way to make a difference and make a new friend!

“Our Dog’s Day Out Adventure program gives people and pups the chance for a few hours of stress-relieving fun,” said Mirah Horowitz, Founder and CEO of Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. “If you can’t own a pet right now, but want a chance to take a pup for a walk or a hike, this is an amazing program. Plus, the pups we have staying in boarding locations get the chance for some one-on-one people time. It’s a win-win!”

A Dog’s Day Out adventures are fun, enjoyable and rewarding, and offer the companionship and mental and physical health benefits of having pets without the long-term responsibility. Studies show that pets reduce stress, anxiety and depression, ease loneliness, encourage exercise and improve our all-around health. And, of course, fostering is beneficial for the foster pet as well. Recent research funded by Maddie’s Fund shows that even brief Dog Day Out outings increased dogs’ likelihood of adoption by more than five times. (Longer foster stays increased dogs’ likelihood of adoption by more than 14 times!)

Spending time with a furry friend has benefits for both parties, and scheduling some doggie dates is a wonderful way to celebrate National Friendship Day year round!
