Searching for My Community

Robert Badura and his rescue pup

I first got involved with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue last year, starting out as a volunteer driver and dog handler at adoption events. What began as a way to spend my free time quickly became something much more meaningful. I immediately fell in love with the environment, the mission, and most importantly, the people. About six months ago, I decided to take the plunge and become an Adoption Coordinator, which has easily been one of the best decisions I've ever made, right up there with adopting my own Lucky Dog, Walter. He's been a great addition to my life, the best pug-basset hound-chihuahua mix anyone could ever ask for!

When I moved to the DMV from Nebraska after graduating college, I wasn't just looking for a job, I was looking for a community. While searching "dog rescue groups near me" on Google, I happened to come across Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. As fate would have it, Lucky Dog was the first result that appeared. A few clicks later, I found myself signed up to volunteer and driving a puppy from boarding to a Saturday adoption event. That first event is still something I vividly remember, I met an incredible group of volunteers who welcomed me with open arms into the Lucky Dog family. They showed up with lawn chairs, treats, water bottles, sunscreen, and all the supplies needed for a long day. Meanwhile, I arrived completely unprepared, having no idea what I was getting myself into.

As time went on, I got the hang of things. I drove more dogs, handled more dogs, and spent countless weekends at adoption events. Eventually, I became one of the more experienced handlers, and staff even trusted me with some of our more reactive or easily overwhelmed dogs, dogs that are often reserved for our "master handlers." Building trust with those dogs and helping them successfully interact with potential adopters was incredibly rewarding. Every dog had a unique personality, and I loved getting the chance to bond with them and help showcase their best qualities.

I'm not entirely sure what finally pushed me to raise my hand and begin training as an Adoption Coordinator, but I'm so glad I did. Beyond becoming close friends with my amazing cohort of fellow Adoption Coordinators, the experience has been incredibly fulfilling. I have the privilege of advocating for our dogs, helping adopters understand their needs, and guiding families through one of the most exciting decisions they'll ever make. There is nothing quite like seeing a dog you've worked with find their forever home. Knowing that I can play a small part in creating those happy endings is what keeps me coming back and reminds me why I do what I do.

As long as I call the DMV home, I plan to continue volunteering with Lucky Dog. What started as a simple Google search for a way to get involved in my new community has turned into one of the most rewarding parts of my 20s. I've found friendships, purpose, and countless unforgettable moments with both people and dogs. I would encourage anyone who loves animals to consider volunteering in some capacity. Not only is it a meaningful way to spend your time, but it's also incredibly rewarding. Whether you're transporting dogs, handling them at events, fostering, or helping behind the scenes, every volunteer plays an important role in giving these animals the chance to find the loving homes they deserve. Sign up right now, I dare you!
