Lucky Dog's Casino Night: A Celebration of Lifesaving Success
On October 19, 2024, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue hosted its 11th Annual Let's Get Lucky Casino Night Gala at the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C., and it was nothing short of a spectacular success. The event brought together supporters, volunteers, and animal lovers for an unforgettable night, raising over $100,000 to support Lucky Dog’s mission to save more animals in need. The funds raised will directly help over 500 dogs and cats, providing them with lifesaving veterinary care, food, shelter, and, ultimately, loving homes.
The night kicked off with the special VIP “Fat Cat Club,” where early attendees enjoyed cocktails and an exclusive auction preview. As the main event opened, guests were greeted with lively casino games, including Craps, Roulette, Blackjack, and Poker. The venue buzzed with excitement, and the spectacular backdrop of the Washington DC skyline, including views of the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument, added a truly memorable twist to the night, setting the stage for an evening that balanced the thrill of gaming with the purpose of saving lives.
One of the evening's highlights was the Lucky Dog Presentation and Awards Ceremony, where Lucky Dog’s Founder and CEO, Mirah Horowitz, took the stage to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the organization. This year, Grant and Catherine Phillips Verstandig received the Lisa Schreiber Impact Award, recognizing their outstanding commitment to supporting the rescue’s lifesaving efforts. Additionally, Chip Reid was celebrated as the Volunteer of the Year, a tribute to his dedication and countless hours spent helping Lucky Dog achieve its mission.
The timing of Casino Night couldn't have been more crucial. The event came on the heels of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which wreaked havoc, leaving many pets displaced and in urgent need of rescue. Lucky Dog’s recent response to these disasters highlighted the organization’s commitment and capacity to act swiftly. Partnering with Greater Good Charities and Southwest Airlines, Lucky Dog facilitated the transport of almost 150 animals from South Carolina to Wisconsin in a truly special emergency airlift, making space in storm-impacted shelters for injured and displaced pets. This flight came on the heels of another rescue flight that evacuated 125 animals from the south to Wisconsin.
The event served as a celebration of these achievements and a reminder of the work that still lies ahead. One of the highlights of the evening was the fund-a-need program, during which Jon and Joan Mayer, long-time Lucky Dog volunteers and supporters, helped Lucky Dog raise almost $35,000 to enable Lucky Dog to continue responding to disasters, performing life-saving surgeries, and expanding their rescue operations. The South Carolina Rescue Campus, a cornerstone of Lucky Dog’s operations, has been a vital hub for these efforts, having conducted over 2,000 spay/neuter surgeries and distributed 15,000 pounds of pet food to partner shelters this year alone.
In addition to the awards, guests were treated to a captivating video by Creative Liquid, which showcased the impact of Lucky Dog’s work and highlighted some of the dogs and cats that have found new homes thanks to the organization’s relentless efforts.
As the night continued, the gaming and dancing resumed, with the silent auction offering an array of exciting items and experiences for bid. Due to popular demand, the auction was extended online, allowing supporters to place bids until October 27th. The event concluded with the raffle drawing, wrapping up a night that not only brought the community together but also helped secure a brighter future for countless animals.
The success of Casino Night demonstrates the power of community and the incredible difference that can be made when people come together for a common cause. With over $100,000 raised and hundreds of lives saved, the event marked a significant milestone in Lucky Dog's ongoing mission to rescue and rehome animals in need.
