In One Year, 2,775 Pets Were Adopted In Association with PetSmart Adoption Events

Every Sunday, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue arrives on site at a local Pet Smart in the DC Metro area and sets up for a 3 hour adoption event. More than 100 staff and volunteers show up to help showcase the dogs and cats looking for forever homes, often seeing between 30-50 pets finding their lifelong families. This incredible feat of organized chaos – with anywhere from 40-100 dogs and 20-50 cats onsite – is a true testament to the dedication of the Lucky Dog Team.

The numbers are important – and impressive – not only because they represent lives saved but also because PetSmart Charities provides adoption rewards for every pet adopted. But the numbers are just the beginning of the story.

Buddy waited nearly four years for his time to shine at an adoption event. This sweet, senior shepherd mix came to Lucky Dog Animal Rescue from Puerto Rico in 2021, and found his perfect person at a PetSmart adoption event at the end of 2024, just in time to have a home for the holidays. Buddy was known for being loving, cuddly and respectful, but needed a home where he could be a solo dog. His adoring, committed adopter is helping him live his best life, where he even coexists with a cat.

Buddy is one of 2,775 pets adopted in a single year in association with PetSmart Charities, earning Lucky Dog the coveted award of Gold Medal Status – the highest level of partnership that Petsmart Charities recognizes. Only 53 groups in the nation earned this recognition for completing more than 1000 adoptions through PetSmart’s store Adoption Partner program, and Lucky Dog nearly doubled that benchmark number!

“On behalf of everyone at PetSmart Charities, we want to say THANK YOU for the time, effort, and passion you and your team have invested in saving lives and connecting pets with loving families,” said Luisa Germain, Lead Adoption Grants Manager for PetSmart Charities. “We’re celebrating with you and can’t wait to see what success you’ll have in the coming year!”

On any given Sunday, you can meet Lucky Dogs and Cats at PetSmart locations in Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia, and Silver Spring and Bethesda in Maryland.  Just check out the website to see the current schedule.
