A Journey to Freedom for 100 Furry Friends
The last weekend in October was nothing short of incredible! Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, alongside our compassionate partners at Dog Is My Co-Pilot (DIMCP) and Palm Valley Animal Society (PVAS), came together for a monumental journey that gave over 100 animals a fresh start and a brighter future. This final rescue flight marked the end of the 2024 flight season with DIMCP, which spanned from April through October and included six flights total from Texas to Northern Virginia, with a stop along the way in Florence, South Carolina. Each of these carefully planned flights was vital in providing a total of resilient 214 dogs and 89 cats with the opportunity for new beginnings.
From Shelter to Sky: More Than 100 Lives on the Move
Early Saturday morning, the Palm Valley team gathered to load up 86 pets at the local airport in Edinburgh, TX, just a stone’s throw from the U.S./Mexico border. At any given time, PVAS cares for well over 1,000 animals, a remarkable responsibility in a community where over 27% of residents live in poverty and more than 32.5% of children are below the poverty line. There are simply not enough adopters to keep up with the number of animals entering the shelter.
This flight represented a new chapter for each of the 86 hopeful dogs and cats who eagerly awaited their journey to freedom. Among these was Zoltan, a dog who had been in PVAS’s care for two years. Captain Wojo, DIMCP’s fearless pilot, made Zoltan his special co-pilot. This gentle dog’s story is one of patience and hope, and as the wheels touched down in Northern Virginia, his new adoptive family was already there to bring him home.
PVAS: A Beacon of Change in a Vulnerable Community
In the last four years, PVAS has become a haven for stray and surrendered animals in the Rio Grande Valley, thanks in large part to the leadership of Director of Operations Faith Wright. Historically, PVAS managed around 40,000 animal intakes per year with a live release rate of just 20%. With no limit on intake numbers, disease was rampant due to the lack of separation between new arrivals and the facility’s overflow of animals.
Since Faith began, however, she has implemented impactful changes that have reduced intakes to about 8,500 animals in 2023 and resulted in an impressive 87% save rate. These remarkable improvements were made possible through programs like the PVAS Pet Resource and Intake Diversion Center, which supports owners who need assistance keeping their pets, monthly free pet pantries, and regular free vaccine clinics.
A Special Stop in South Carolina
Not all the animals on board flew all the way to Virginia. The flight made an important stop in South Carolina so 16 dogs and six cats could go to our South Carolina Rescue Campus to receive essential veterinary care. At the same time, 15 dogs and cats who were ready for adoption were loaded on the plane to head to Virginia, bringing the total number of animals saved during this operation to over 100. Among these, 15 were survivors from areas recently impacted by hurricanes and had been provided care and safety at Lucky Dog’s South Carolina campus.

Coming Home to New Beginnings
With Virginia skies ahead, the dogs could sense they were nearing safety, warmth, and the love of a forever family. Volunteers welcomed each animal with open arms and comforting smiles as they touched down, ensuring every dog felt the love and care that would now be theirs.
These are the stories that inspire us, knowing that behind every journey, a new family is waiting, a new life ready to be lived. Thank you to everyone who made this journey possible, and here’s to the incredible dogs who will finally know the joy of a home filled with love and security.
Welcome home, Lucky Dogs!
