Giving Back to the Community That Gives Me So Much Joy
My journey into volunteering and rescue started long before I realized it. In 2012, I attended an adoption event and instantly fell in love with a shy hound named Ophelia. She could barely look anyone in the eye, but I knew she was mine. Years later, in 2018, I wanted to give back to the community that had given me so much joy. I began volunteering with Lucky Dog, handling dogs at adoption events and transporting them from our boarding partners. I was drawn to the dogs who needed a little extra help showing their best selves. Watching each one finally find their forever home—no matter how long it took—was the most rewarding feeling.
As I became more involved, I found a community of like-minded animal lovers. Having always had cats, fostering kittens felt like a natural next step. Soon, my weekends were filled with tiny paws and playful energy. I loved sharing their stories, helping them find homes, and seeing how much joy they brought to adopters. Whether it’s a shy dog or a fragile kitten, both need patience, love, and advocacy—and being part of that process is something I cherish deeply. During this time, my sweet Ophelia passed away, and not long after, I met Deer, a timid shepherd puppy who became my soul dog. Her big personality and loving spirit completely changed my world.
Today, I serve as both a dedicated volunteer and the Development Officer, Major Gifts at Lucky Dog. At home, I’m surrounded by my four beloved rescue pets: Deer, a Lucky Dog, and three cats—Frank, Goldie, and Charlie, a Lucky Kitty. Lucky Dog gave me my pets, my people, and a purpose I truly believe in.
