Finding My Place and My Purpose
I’ve always loved dogs, and I was fortunate enough to grow up with one. We adopted one of the first Lucky Dogs in 2009, and he was with me from elementary school through college. My sweet Benji boy passed away two days before my college graduation, at 14 and a half.
After his passing, I was thrown into a world of uncertainty. I didn’t have a stable job, stable group of friends, or idea of what I was going to do next. The only thing I could think of to help with the grief of missing him was volunteering with the group we adopted him from over 14 years ago.
So that’s what I did. I signed up to be a handler in June of 2023, and then eventually a foster. I showed up for these dogs even when I wasn’t able to show up for myself. On my third foster, I fell in love, and adopted her. I wasn’t looking to adopt, but I knew she was special and I couldn’t let her go.
Almost three years later, I’m still handling, fostering, and filling in wherever needed. My heart is with the dogs that need a little extra attention, the shy ones, the reactive ones, and the ones that might be overlooked at an event. I love watching them gain confidence and become the best version of themselves. Lucky Dog has become a family for me when I needed it the most, and I’m forever grateful for that.
If you are thinking about volunteering with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, I’d highly encourage you to sign up and give it a try. And if you see me at an upcoming adoption event, stop by and say hello to me and whichever Lucky Dog I’m hanging out with for the day.
