Beyond the Beaches: My Rescue Trip to Puerto Rico with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue

Recently, I had the opportunity to join Lucky Dog Animal Rescue on a trip to Puerto Rico — a journey that I thought would simply be a chance to lend a helping hand, maybe get a little sunshine, and do some good. What I walked away with, however, was something far deeper: a powerful reminder of the difference individuals can make, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Puerto Rico is a place of beauty, resilience, and compassion — and that was never more evident than when I witnessed the efforts of local individuals doing everything they can to help animals in need. In a region where formal rescue organizations aren’t as common as what we’re used to in places like the DC area, everyday people are stepping up in remarkable ways. From neighbors feeding and caring for stray dogs in their communities, to others opening up their homes to protect cats and dogs, the sense of responsibility and kindness is inspiring.

One of the highlights of the trip was getting to volunteer with Love4Satos, one of Lucky Dog’s incredible local partners. Their facility, their mission, and their commitment to both the animals and the community left me absolutely in awe. What they’ve built — often with limited resources — is nothing short of amazing. They’re filling a gap in animal welfare infrastructure and doing it with heart, grit, and love.

As if the trip hadn’t already touched my soul enough, I also had the chance to escort one of the sweetest puppies I’ve ever met — Baby Raquel — back to the mainland. She was an angel on the flight and melted hearts the second she landed in DC. She quickly found a foster home and, before long, was adopted into a loving forever family. Watching that journey unfold from rescue to adoption — and getting to play a small part in it — was incredibly rewarding.

This trip was a powerful reminder that even something that might seem small — like volunteering for a weekend or fostering for a few weeks — can have a life-changing impact. It’s not about how much you do; it’s about doing something. Whether it’s fostering, donating supplies, contributing funds, or just spreading awareness, every effort matters.

And, yes — in the immortal words of Bob Barker (shoutout to my fellow Price Is Right fans) — please remember to spay and neuter your pets. It’s one of the simplest and most effective ways to help reduce the overpopulation crisis that so many communities, like those in Puerto Rico, are working tirelessly to manage.

To the people of Puerto Rico and the rescuers doing everything they can with what little they have: thank you for your strength and your compassion. You reminded me that kindness knows no boundaries and that every one of us has the power to be part of the solution — no matter how near or far from home we are.
